WA Health infrastructure projects

Building for better health

The Department of Health is leading the development of significant healthcare infrastructure investment across Western Australia – the world’s biggest health district in terms of area.

Long-term planning to meet the needs of growing and disparate communities lays the foundation for a vast and ongoing construction program.

From north to south across our great state, in our cities, regional and local communities, we are building facilities to help ensure people can get the care they need, when they need it.

We work closely with our health service providers (the health regions), other government departments, clinicians and consumers to design and build state-of-the-art facilities.

Project delivery

The Department’s Health Infrastructure (HI) Directorate leads the development of strategies and planning of infrastructure and assets for the WA health system.

HI provides project governance policies, reporting and assurance to ensure the Department retains appropriate oversight of health infrastructure projects.

The Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery (OMID), within the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI), is the delivery agency for health infrastructure projects of more than $100 million or that are highly complex and/or high risk.

WA Health works with OMID in the Project Definition Plan (PDP) phase, particularly in relation to functional briefs, schedules of accommodation. OMID provides contracts, procurement and delivery expertise and works with industry partners in the construction of projects.

Once construction is complete, the asset is handed over to WA Health to finalise commissioning activities.

Any non-residential infrastructure project within the Department of Health’s Asset Investment Portfolio that does not meet the Major Projects criteria is delivered by the Department and or HSPs in collaboration with the Department of Housing and Works as the delivery agency.
