Rockingham Mental Health Emergency Centre

The Rockingham Mental Health Emergency Centre (MHEC) will deliver critical service improvements for people experiencing acute mental health crises or experiencing serious behavioural disturbance because of alcohol and/or drug intoxication.

The MHEC will support voluntary patients in a mental health short-stay unit.

The model of care has been designed to fast-track voluntary mental health, alcohol and other drugs and/or toxicology presentations out of the ED environment into a dedicated, well-resourced, low-stimulus environment.

The MHEC will:

• provide a purpose-built, therapeutic, low-stimulus environment to facilitate the stabilisation and recovery of consumers with mental health and/or alcohol and other drugs (AOD) presentations
• deliver evidence-based, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, multidisciplinary acute mental health care that promotes consumer resilience and strength, and builds on patient recovery
• address the mutual relationship between AOD use and mental health conditions through an integrated service approach
• reduce time spent in ED through the fast-tracked streaming of suitable presentations to specialist short-term care
