Policy Frameworks

The WA health system consists of the Department of HealthHealth Service Providers and contracted health entities. The Director General as the System Manager has responsibility of the overall management of the WA health system, providing leadership and strategic direction to Health Service Providers and Department of Health (WA health entities).

Under section 26 of the Health Services Act 2016, the Director General has issued 15 binding policy frameworks to ensure a consistent approach to a range of core business functions ensuring all Western Australians receive the same level of high quality care, regardless of their location or the service they access.

Each policy framework contains a set of mandatory policies that prescribe requirements and standards or procedures. These policies establish clear guardrails that define the level of consistency and discretion available to WA health entities. This approach enables WA health entities to operate within well defined parameters while allowing for local adaption where appropriate.
