Who is overweight and obese in Western Australia?
People who are
socioeconomically disadvantaged (external site)
are more likely to be overweight and obese.
Western Australians living in
regional and remote areas (external site)
have higher rates of overweight and obesity than those living in inner major cities.
In 2012-13, 67% of
Aboriginal people living in WA (external site)
aged 15 and over were overweight (28%) or obese (39%). Aboriginal people were almost 1.5 times
more likely to be obese (external site)
than non-Aboriginal people.
The rates of overweight and obesity are much higher among Western Australians over
45 years of age
.
