Advanced skill enrolled nurse

Enrolled nurses (ENs) who can demonstrate a broad range of cognitive, technical, and communication skills in their clinical setting may apply to be classified as an advanced skill enrolled nurse (ASEN).

An ASEN is a specialist in their clinical area, can undertake more complex aspects of care and are remunerated as such. ASEN classification is an industrially led process where ENs are recognised for their advanced skills and practice through experience and completion of the Advanced Skill Enrolled Nurse 1 Competencies Workbook (the Workbook), or a post registration qualification.

The Workbook enables an EN to be assessed for the ASEN 1 classification across 3 competency areas:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of advanced clinical assessment
  • Demonstrate knowledge of research and report on nursing trends and practice
  • Demonstrate knowledge of quality improvement for advancement of clinical practice.

The Workbook provides the guidance and resources required to support an EN and their line manager through the process.

Details about ASEN classifications can be found in the WA Health System – United Workers Union (WA) – Enrolled Nurses, Assistants in Nursing, Aboriginal Health Workers, Ethnic Health Workers and Aboriginal Health Practitioners Industrial Agreement.
