In Western Australia any project that is captured under the Radiation Safety (General) Regulations, will need to be considered by the Radiological Council.

In some circumstances, the Council will need to approve the proposed project.

The Council meets every month except January (11 times a year). Items for Council consideration should be submitted at least 1 month before the meeting.

All proponents for large scale projects must be aware of the following:

  • If radioactive substances, irradiating apparatus (x-ray equipment) or prescribed electronic products are to be involved or used in the project there may be licensing and registration requirements, as per the Radiation Safety Act 1975 (external site).
  • Radiation safety on mining operations is also subject to regulation under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and accompanying regulations. These came into effect in 2022. (replacing the Mines Safety and Inspection Act).
