Recruitment of interns in Western Australia is coordinated by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Western Australia (external site).

Resident Medical Officers and Service Medical Registrars

The annual WA Health centralised recruitment round for RMOs and SMRs will open Monday 26 May and close Monday 23 June 2025 at 1200hrs AWST. Two rounds of offers will be made in August and September. 

The Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) coordinates the centralised recruitment of Resident Medical Officers (RMO) and Service Medical Registrars (SMR) on behalf of the hospitals in WA.

Basic physician training (BPT)

Basic Physician Training - Adult Internal Medicine

Western Australian (WA) Adult Medicine Basic Physician Training (BPT) Network Committee oversees the selection into Basic Physician training in WA. BPT in Adult Internal Medicine (AIM) is offered through the following four WA networks

  • South Network (Accredited Level 3 Training Setting -Fiona Stanley Hospital)
  • East Network (Accredited Level 3 Training Setting - Royal Perth Hospital)
  • North Network (Accredited Level 3 Training Setting - Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital)
  • Rural Network – (WA Rural Physician Training Pathway)

NEW for 2026: WA Rural Physician Training Pathway

We are pleased to announce the official launch of the WA Rural Physician Training Pathway for the 2026 intake. The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) operates as an accredited training network and benefits from a Royal Australasian College of Physicians Level 1 training time exemption for trainees on the WA Rural Physician Training Pathway. This allows trainees to complete up to 24 months of their BPT in WACHS Level 1 accredited training settings, with supported transition into a Level 3 training setting to meet the RACP training requirements. This new pathway offers a unique opportunity for trainees seeking a diverse clinical experience and a career in rural or regional medicine.

Accredited WACHS training settings include:

  • Albany Health Campus
  • Broome Health Campus
  • Geraldton Hospital
  • Kalgoorlie Health Campus
  • Bunbury Regional Hospital

Key Information

  • Separate Application: The WA Rural Physician Training Pathway has an independent application process, separate from the centralised process for the East, North, and South Networks.
  • Earlier Opening: Applications for the WA Rural Pathway open earlier in the year.

2026 Application Dates

  • WA Rural Physician Training Pathway: Opens Monday, 23 June 2025
  • East, North and South Network 2026 intake: Opens Monday, 1 September 2025

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have 2+ years of postgraduate clinical experience in Australia (or equivalent) to apply for BPT.
  • To apply for BPT with East, North, and South Networks, you must first secure employment as a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) or Service Medical Registrar (SMR) at your preferred network hospital.
  • To apply for WA Rural Physician Training Pathway, Candidates are just required to apply to the RMO or SMR pool at an accredited WACHS site (training placement remain contingent on successfully securing employment).

Continuing Trainees

A shortened application process is available for continuing trainees within the same network. Eligible trainees will be contacted directly with instructions via email for submitting their simplified application for 2026.

Western Australia AIM | Entry into Basic Training

WA RACP Member Support Office:

Basic Physician Training - paediatrics and child health

BPT in Paediatrics and Child Health: Entry into the BPT pathway follows a separate application process. To be eligible for this process, candidates seeking to register with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) as a first-year basic paediatric trainee are first required to secure employment for 12 months with Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) as a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) or Registrar, or secure employment for 12 months with Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) as a Paediatric or Neonatal Registrar. This must occur prior to the BPT Entry into Training application period – for 2025 applicants, the cut-off date is Sunday 11 August 2024. Prospective trainees, who have accepted eligible employment, will be informed of the BPT selection process by PCH Postgraduate Medical Education (PCH PGME).

Service surgical registrars (SSR)

The 2026 WA Service Surgical Registrar (SSR) Recruitment opens on Monday 9 June 2025.

The centralised recruitment process allows applicants to submit ONE application to cover THREE site and specialty preferences for employment as an SSR with the participating WA health service employers listed below. 

The employing hospitals and health services include the following:

  • Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group (FSFHG)
  • Joondalup Health Campus (JHC)
  • Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH)
  • Royal Perth Bentley Group (RPBG) (including WACHS)
  • Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group (SCGOPHCG)
