Bird flu detected in WA wildlife: Public health risk remains low

30 June 2026

H5 avian influenza (H5 bird flu) has been detected in wild birds in southern WA.

Bird

H5 bird flu does not spread easily to people, and the risk to the wider community remains low.

People should avoid touching sick or dead birds and keep pets away from them.

If you see a sick or dead bird or wildlife, avoid contact, record what you see and report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Getting your seasonal influenza vaccine is the best way to protect against seasonal flu and reduce risk of co-infection with both human and avian influenza viruses.
