In an emergency department, patients are always seen and treated in order of clinical urgency.

Triage categories are allocated to each patient on arrival by experienced staff members, with triage 1 representing a life threatening condition, and triage 5 representing a minor or chronic condition.

The average waiting time that is displayed on the web page is for patients who have been assessed as triage category 4, that is the most frequently allocated triage category.
