Notification of terminations of pregnancy (induced abortion)

Any medical practitioner who performs a termination of pregnancy (induced abortion) must notify the Department of Health of the event within 14 days of the abortion being performed.

Relevant legislation

The statutory requirement to notify a termination of pregnancy (induced abortion) is specified in Sections 335 (5) (b) and (d) of the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911 (external site) (Part XIII).

Responsibility for notification

The medical practitioner performing the abortion.

Who must be notified

Under the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911 , the Chief Health Officer must be notified.

Notifications to be forwarded to the Maternal and Child Health team, Data Management, Information and Performance Governance Unit.

How to notify

Notification must be made using Form 1 - Notification by Medical Practitioner of Induced Abortion.

E-form (external link) version of Form 1 to notify the Chief Health Officer using a secure on-line form provided by the Department of Health.

If a paper version of Form 1 is preferred. These are available from the Maternal and Child Health team, Data Management, Information and Performance Governance Unit.

Notification due

Within 14 days of the abortion being performed.
