Hospital in the Home (HiTH)

Hospital in the Home (HiTH) provides eligible patients with the ability to receive acute inpatient care in the comfort of their own home, away from a hospital setting.

Patients don’t always have to be in a physical hospital to receive the care they need. HiTH supports timely discharge from a public hospital allowing patients to recover in familiar surroundings while still being under expert medical care.

The service includes a multidisciplinary team of health professionals who support a patient’s treatment requirements. HiTH patients are regarded as hospital patients and will receive daily high-quality hospital-comparable care and monitoring at home, until they are discharged. The service is free for Western Australian public hospital patients.

The service benefits eligible patients by:

  • providing acute inpatient level care in a patient’s home
  • allowing patients to remain close to their family and carers while receiving treatment in a familiar environment
  • reducing the risk of hospital acquired complications.

The Department of Health maintains a stewardship role in relation to HiTH in Western Australia, collaborating with public HiTH services statewide to optimise and enhance HiTH service delivery.
