Healthier Venues

When we assessed our canteen menu with the help of the WA School Canteen Association

0:18

we found that we didn't have many healthy options

0:22

and that we were serving a whole lot of fatty sugary

0:25

unhealthy foods. As a club, this was a huge wake-up call

0:30

and we decided that we wanted to put our children's

0:33

and our own health first by increasing the healthy foods we had on offer on our

0:38

menu

0:38

while reducing the unhealthy ones.

0:43

0:46

So our first step was to contact the Healthy Canteens team.

0:51

They offered us some great resources and support

0:54

to take on the challenge of creating a healthier canteen.

0:58

They worked with us to create great new menu

1:01

which was profitable, time-efficient and minimised wastage.

1:05

So I didn't realise how easy it would be to make healthy changes.

1:10

I was worried we would have to get rid of our biggest seller, chips.

1:14

But all we had to do was reduce the portion sizes.

1:17

This was easy. We went from large chip buckets

1:20

to smaller paper bags. We got more serves from one frying basket

1:25

and we increased our turnover.

1:29

The new menu was widely accepted by not only the athletes but also the parents and

1:33

spectators.

1:34

Switching to a healthier menu can increase your profits 10 to 15 percent.

Belmont Oasis promotes fitness and healthy living.

1:44

However, an assessment of our menu found that three quarters of our food offering

1:48

was classified as unhealthy. The Healthy Canteens team

1:51

provides us with great ideas to promote healthy options and gives us advice on how to

1:55

structure our menu for

1:56

adults and children. I can't stress enough how easy it was for my staff to make these

2:01

healthy food changes

2:02

and was well received by the community. We were worried about the wastage of our new fresh

2:06

foods

2:07

but we fixed that by serving fresh fruit salad one day and using the leftovers in smoothies the next.

2:13

2:16

We've always made salad.

2:21

Now we just make one big salad in the morning and use it across our menu and as a side salad for the

2:26

rest of the day. And you know what? It's still profitable. Gradually all the

2:30

small changes have added up

2:31

with our healthy foods almost doubling and our unhealthy foods almost halved.

2:36

I encourage other leisure centres and sporting clubs

2:39

to get support from the Healthy Canteens team to change their menu.

2:43

It's all free and it's tailored to your needs. The health of our community

2:48

is everyone's responsibility.
