E-learning Falls Prevention Module
This E-learning Falls Prevention training package (external site) is a collaborative initiative from the Safety and Quality Investment for Reform (SQuIRe) and falls prevention teams in the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS).
The content is based on the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare’s Preventing falls and harm from falls in older people: best practice guidelines for Australian hospitals (external site).
- It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
- Results from the final quiz can be printed as evidence of completion.
- It is a valuable learning tool for all WA Health hospital staff.
Falls in Hospital – A doctor's guide to prevention and management
A short 8 minute educational video on falls prevention and management is available for doctors working in WA hospitals.
The video goes through the following sections:
- introduction to fall in hospitals
- evidence for prevention
- post fall medical care
- secondary falls prevention.
It can be used as a training tool for new doctors or existing staff and is applicable to all metropolitan sites. If you have any queries or would like a copy of the video on DVD, please email the Falls Prevention Health Network or phone 9222 0200.

E-Ageing Online Learning Tool
The E-Ageing Online Learning Tool (external site) for health professionals was developed by the Western Australian Centre for Health and Ageing. There is a module specifically for falls which provides an interactive case study which considers care for a person who has fallen.
The Victorian Geriatric Medicine Training Program
The Victorian Geriatric Medicine Training Program (VGMTP) (external site) has developed a number of education modules, one of which is specific to falls and balance.
Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency packages
A number of self-directed learning packages are available and have been designed to be used by anyone at any home, at any time, and can be downloaded free from Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (external site).
Recordings from face-to-face learning sessions
Several organisations arrange educational presentations from experts in the falls prevention field to provide opportunities to raise people’s knowledge about falls prevention. Where possible, recordings of falls prevention presentations are made available online through ICCWA (external site) for people who are unable to attend.

TRAining Centre in Subacute Care (TRACS) (external site) aims to improve the quality of services provided to Western Australians in the areas of:
- rehabilitation
- geriatric evaluation and management
- psychogeriatric care.
This is achieved by supporting enhanced opportunities in training and skills development for staff who work in these areas.
