Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot

The Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot aims to provide Western Australians with additional access to treatment for a range of common health conditions.

Pharmacists who have completed an approved university graduate certificate course will be able to assess, manage, and treat a range of conditions in a community pharmacy setting and be able to prescribe certain Schedule 4 medications.

This initiative builds on existing pharmacy services Pharmacist immunisation in WA, Treatment of urinary tract infection (UTIs) by pharmacists and Resupply of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) by pharmacists.

Service delivery is expected to commence by 2027, following the completion of pharmacist postgraduate training and finalisation of regulatory amendments. The pilot is anticipated to continue until 2028.

About the pilot

The Minister for Health announced the WA Government’s commitment to implementing the Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot on 9 August 2024.

The WA Department of Health is currently collaborating with state and national stakeholders on establishing care models, training pathways, and engagement processes for this pilot. Work to amend the Medicines and Poisons Regulations 2016 is underway, which will support community pharmacists to prescribe within pilot protocols.

This project is being led by the Chief Allied Health Office, WA Department of Health. More information will be provided as project progresses.
