Campaign PrEP – HIV prevention

Promotion of free HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medicine for Medicare-ineligible people living in Western Australia.
Objectives

The campaign supports the WA Department of Health objectives to reduce HIV transmission and improve equitable access to prevention by aiming to:

  • Increase awareness that free HIV PrEP medicine may be available for Medicare-ineligible people, including international students, temporary visa holders and undocumented residents.
  • Direct audiences to clear, accessible information about PrEP and how to access this medication.
  • Support partner organisations and frontline services to promote the program and refer eligible people to appropriate care pathways.
Key messages
  • PrEP is a highly effective medication that lowers the risk of acquiring HIV when taken as prescribed.
  • Medicare-ineligible people living in WA can access PrEP through sexual health clinics at Royal Perth and Fremantle Hospitals.
Targeted audience

Primary:

  • Medicare-ineligible people such as international students and temporary visa holders, primarily males aged 18-30 years old.

Secondary:

  • University health and wellbeing services.
  • Sexual health clinics and service providers.
  • English language colleges, student hubs and multicultural organisations.
Timing

The program will run from 3 March 2026 to 1 June 2027
