2024 Aboriginal Cadetship Program – stakeholder toolkit

The Aboriginal Cadetship Program provides candidates with a unique and career defining opportunity to gain experience across a range of career streams.

Tailored for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people studying at university, the Aboriginal Cadetship Program places the cadets in a position that suits their degree and interests, making them part of the Department’s growing Aboriginal network. 

The Aboriginal Cadetship Program provides a range of benefits including:

  • paid work experience while studying
  • cultural mentoring and support
  • employment opportunities and future career pathways
  • valuable workplace experience related to their field of study
  • growing personal and professional support networks.

  • Encourage WA universities to share campaign resources to encourage for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander to apply for the Aboriginal Cadetship Program.

Target audience

Primary audience

People who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander that are currently attending university

Eligibility requirements:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course at a recognised university, and have completed at least one semester but with two or more semesters to complete (equivalent/min 3 units per semester).
  • Commit to 52 cadet days over a 12-month period of employment, starting February or July of the calendar year.

Other desirable traits include:

  • Motivated achievers who are interested in improving their job prospects and growing future career in health.
  • We are looking for students from a range of disciplines and degrees including but not limited to; business/commerce, finance, public health, health sciences, information technology, medicine, nursing and midwifery, human resources, law, psychology, health promotion, allied health, and many other fields.

WA universities to share campaign resources to encourage for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander to apply for the Aboriginal Cadetship Program.

Timing

Application period for the 2024 Aboriginal Cadet Program intake is 15 September 2023 until 13 October 2023. Candidates can apply on the Department of Health jobs board (external site)
