Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis and treatment through General Practitioners (GPs)

Effective assessment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve quality of life, educational outcomes, employment participation and wellbeing.

Historically, access to ADHD diagnosis and prescribing of stimulant medicines in Western Australia has largely relied on psychiatrists and paediatricians. Increasing demand for services and a limited specialist workforce has resulted in long wait times and challenges accessing care, particularly outside metropolitan areas.

The ADHD GP Program expands the role of appropriately trained GPs to provide ADHD assessment and management for suitable patients, while maintaining specialist involvement for more complex cases.

What is changing?

Under recent WA ADHD GP-led ADHD care reforms:

specially trained GPs will be able to assess and diagnose ADHD in patients aged 10 years and older
trained GPs will be able to prescribe ADHD stimulant medicines in accordance with legislative and clinical requirements
complex presentations and patients requiring specialist expertise will continue to be referred to psychiatrists, paediatricians or other appropriate specialists.

GP-led ADHD care in Western Australia

The WA ADHD GP Program supports appropriately trained GPs to deliver ADHD assessment, diagnosis and treatment within a structured clinical governance framework.

The program aligns with contemporary evidence, national clinical guidance and broader efforts to improve access to community-based ADHD care across Australia.

Participating GPs:

complete a comprehensive ADHD training program developed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australasian ADHD Professionals Association (AADPA)
work within WA legislative and prescribing requirements
participate in ongoing professional development and quality assurance activities.

Clinical governance

WA Health provides oversight of the program, working in partnership with the RACGP and key clinical stakeholders.

A dedicated oversight committee has been established to guide implementation, with a focus on safety, quality and equitable access across Western Australia.

GP training and accreditation

The ADHD GP Program training is being developed and delivered by the RACGP (external site), in partnership with the AADPA.

The program includes:

accurate ADHD assessment and diagnosis
management of ADHD, including safe prescribing within WA regulations and non-pharmacological care identification of complex cases requiring referral
ongoing mentorship and clinical support.

Information for patients, families and carers

What does this mean for me?

As more GPs complete specialised training, eligible patients may be able to access ADHD (Healthy WA) assessment, diagnosis and treatment closer to home through participating general practices.

Benefits may include:

improved access to care in the community
reduced waiting times for assessment and treatment
better access to services in regional and rural Western Australia
more coordinated care delivered through a patient's regular GP.

Will GPs be limited in how many patients they can see initially?

GP stimulant prescribing will commence with an authorised patient load of 50 patients for whom the GP is the primary prescriber. This does not include patients managed under shared-care arrangements with another primary prescriber, such as a paediatrician or psychiatrist. This initial limit is designed to support safe practice during early implementation, rather than to impose a fixed limit on patient access.

GPs can apply to increase their authorised patient load through a structured process, with approvals considered on a case-by-case basis. Decisions are informed by demonstrated clinical safety and capacity to manage additional patients.

This approach enables the safe scaling of GP involvement in ADHD care

Will I still need to see a specialist?

Some people will continue to require care from a psychiatrist, paediatrician or multidisciplinary team.

Examples may include:

under 10 years of age
complex diagnostic presentations
significant co-occurring mental health or developmental conditions
cases requiring highly specialised assessment or treatment.
