| The Need for WLB: | Divorcee who needs to care for children as in Parenting Statement | |
| Outcome: | Purchased Leave | |
Sam has been divorced for 2 years now. According to the divorce agreement, he has to care for his children for about 6 to 7 weeks of the year during the school holidays. This excludes any pupil free days, assemblies, school events etc. This is more than his entitlement of 4 weeks annual leave. To make matters worse, his elderly parents live in another country and are currently in frail health. This has caused further pressure and stress for Sam.
To meet the conditions stated during his divorce, Sam has to purchase 2 weeks leave a year. This year, he had to purchase additional weeks of leave, as he wanted to visit his sick parents as well.
He recognises that the response depends entirely on the person responsible for approving the leave. Without the support of his Director, Sam would not have been able to continue both working and caring for his children.
The division would have lost an experienced staff member and Sam a job if the Director was not supportive of Sam’s application.
