Dept of Medical Physics, Royal Perth Hospital, Perth

The Need for WLB:   Father of 4 who needed more time with the family
Outcome:   Flexible work arrangements

In 2004 the Hospital and Salaried Officers union and the Department of Health registered an Enterprise Agreement. Pursuant to that Agreement Clause 16 and 17 the department of Medical Physics implemented a flexible working arrangement with one of their Senior Medical Physicists’ for family reasons.

As the parent of 4 children aged between 13 – 1.5 years old, an arrangement was made pertaining to the above EBA. His wife studies on a Monday between 0900-1230hrs and they were unable to access childcare for this timeframe until 2007.

Line Manager and the Head of Medical Physics agreed that the employee would be able to convert any overtime to TOIL and take it on every Monday when needed to care for the children. This TOIL can only be applied for 1 month in advance. TOIL is also kept to allow for contingencies such a school needs but this needs a weeks written notification prior.

The work arrangements allowed for the ability to convert to TOIL as the employee works core hours and has to be available for on call and overtime.
