The Need for WLB:   To spend more time with family
Outcome:   4 day week and succession plan

I am a full-time Theatre Manager hitting my 40s. I am a mother of 2 school aged children. As a Theatre Manager, I am charged with all service delivery and staffing issues. Due to the nature of work, I start early and finish late.

I have no complaints with work or at work. Though I have the normal pressure and stress that goes with the job, it is no more than any other person with similar responsibilities or workload. But, it started to dawn on me that I was missing time with my children. By the time I return home, I have so little time with them. I decided to cut down my working hours and spend more time with my 2 little ones.

A year ago, I decided to put my plan into action and discussed my intentions with the Management. The outcome was that I work 4 days a week and another staff member acts in my role on my off-day.

This allowed me to mentor my clinical nurse who was identified by her capabilities and experience for succession planning.

In the long run, it benefited the organisation (by retaining corporate knowledge), the clinical nurse (who had a career path in place) and myself (allowing me to spend more time with my children and having someone trained and readily available to relieve in my role when needed).
