Work Life Balance and Equity

Ward 7 Teen, Princess Margaret Hospital, Perth

The Need for WLB:   Smooth running of the ward
Outcome:   Flexibility in the arrangements of hours/shifts for staff

This ward has had over a number of years (approximately 10) the following flexible work practices:

  • Adjusted shift starting times to accommodate parents taking children to day care and/or school
  • Different shift lengths to suit individual staff
  • Short evening shifts to suit staff who leave children with their partners in the evening
  • Set shifts to accommodate day care
  • Self rostered shifts to support partners’ hours
  • Weekend only shifts for staff with study commitments
  • One RN on contract stipulating she work school terms only
  • A self rostering system that allows all staff to indicate their preference for days off

Whilst some of the above have caused concerns initially, the system in general works well.
