Flexible Modes of Employment
Part-time / Job Share
An employee may request to work part-time or job share. Managers, in consultation with the employee, should consider fully ways to accommodate requests and, where reasonably practicable, implement appropriate arrangements.
Part-time work is regular ongoing employment at less than the standard full time hours. A part-time arrangement can encompass a number of possibilities:
- A part-time employee performs the duties of a part-time position that has discrete functions and responsibilities.
- A part-time employee may be one of two or more part-time employees in discrete part-time positions that together equate to one FTE (full time equivalent).
Job Share is a voluntary arrangement in which two people share one full time job, each working part-time on a regular ongoing basis. Job share can encompass a number of possibilities:
- A full time job is divided between two workers but each is responsible for their own work.
- A full time job is divided between two workers with shared responsibility for the total job.
In certain circumstances, such as return to work from parental leave, part-time work is a condition of employment provided in an employee's industrial agreement, and the relevant clause shall apply.

Fixed Term Contract or Casual Employment
Flexible modes of employment, such as fixed term contracts or casual employment provide the employer and employee with the flexibility of short term employment to meet operational and/or personal requirements. For employees it provides access to additional income on a short term basis and the opportunity to maintain skills and knowledge.
Fixed term contract of service arrangements are used for work of a finite duration, such as covering one-off periods of relief, work on projects with a finite life etc. Some industrial agreements prescribe the circumstances in which fixed term contracts can be used. Also note the Governments Modes of Employment Policy in relation to the management of fixed term contracts in the public sector.
Casual employment has no guaranteed hours of work and is used to meet fluctuating or unforeseen short term needs or where seasonal workloads occur. Casual employment is intermittent with payment on an hourly basis. A casual loading is generally payable in lieu of certain leave entitlements.
Telecommuting
Telecommuting or 'working from home' is a work arrangement in which employees regularly work from home or from a remote site for part of their usual week in lieu of working in the office. Access to telecommuting is subject your Health Service Policy and the requirements of your position and/or work area.
