Kalgoorlie Health Campus

Kalgoorlie Hospital is a 130-bed inpatient facility and one of the largest regional public hospitals in WA. The hospital is comprised of the following units:

  • Emergency Department and High Dependency Unit - The Emergency Department provides 24-hour specialist emergency care with an attached  high dependency unit.  The Department is led by emergency medicine specialists providing direct services and overseeing senior medical officers, registrars and junior medical officer, with on-call consultant services for surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and general medicine.
  • Children’s Ward - The Variety Club Children’s Ward provides and cares for sick infants to adolescents up to age 16.  The unit is managed and supported by paediatric-trained nurses.  There are three specialist paediatricians on staff supporting paediatric registrars and medical officers  The ward operates 17 beds including one high dependency monitored room, four cubicles for isolation if required and two mother and baby units.
  • Medical Ward - The general medical ward provides and cares for adults suffering from a wide range of medical conditions.  The unit is managed and supported by general medicine trained nurses.  There are three specialist physicians, four registrars and senior medical officers as well as a number of junior medical officer and intern positions.  A specialist cardiologist also provides consultancy services to the Ward.  The ward operates 23 beds including small sub-acute rehabilitation unit.
  • Mental Health Inpatient Unit - This specialist-designed and built unit has 7 inpatient beds including a secure observation room.  The unit is managed by mental health trained nurses and medical staff and has both resident and visiting psychiatrists.
  • Surgical Ward -The surgical ward provides pre- and post-operative care for surgical patients.  The unit is managed and supported by surgical trained nurses.  General surgeons, Orthopaedic surgeons and Anaesthetists, as well as registrars and interns provide specialist medical care.  Visiting specialists also provide ENT, Urology, Paediatric and Opthalmology surgical services. The Ward operates 19 overnight beds and seven day surgery beds.
  • Day Ward - The day surgery unit has the facilities for nine patients recovering following surgical, endoscopy or short-stay procedures Gaburu Dialysis Unit This is a stand-alone dialysis service provided at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital for patients with end stage renal disease from across the region.  Treatment is provided by Registered Nurses six days per week, with access to local Physicians and the services of a visiting Nephrologist.  The unit currently has seven chairs which enable it dialyse up to 28 patients three times weekly. Staff also provide care to patients in the region undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis in conjunction with the Home Dialysis Unit at Royal Perth Hospital. The unit will be expanding to 13 chairs in 2016.
  • Outpatients Unit - This service operates five days per week. Patients are referred to specialists prior to or following treatment in the Hospital, or by their General Practitioners for further opinion.
  • Sub-Acute Care Services - This unit provides allied health and nursing rehabilitation services for people post-injury and on discharge from metropolitan hospitals.
  • Maternity Ward - This is an 18 bed unit with four birthing suites.  The Ward averages over 700 births per year, making it the busiest midwifery unit outside the metropolitan area. Care is provided on a shared care basis by an obstetrician/gynaecologist, general practitioners, paediatricians and specialist midwifery staff.
  • Operating Suite - The Operating Suite is comprised of two surgical theatres. General, orthopaedic and obstetrics/gynaecology surgery are provided by both local and visiting surgeons.
  • Allied Health Services - Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Dietetics, Podiatry and Social Work services are provided to inpatients and outpatients by allied health professionals.
