3.1 Bicycle Injury Hospitalisations
During the period 1981 to 1995, there were 9,554 hospitalisations (including re-admissions and transfers) due to bicycle crashes. The rate of bicycle crashes remained relatively constant during this 15-year period whereas the rate of injuries sustained from vehicle crashes decreased from 1985 to 1992 (Figure 1). The admission rate for all injuries also showed a decrease during this period up to and including the 1990-1992 triennium (Table 1).

Notes:
1 Age-standardised rates are per 100,000 person-years.
2 Figures represent the 95% confidence interval for the ASRs.
3 All vehicle crashes include motor vehicle traffic crashes, motor vehicle non-traffic crashes and other road vehicle crashes (including bicycle).
4 See Appendix Table A20 for grouping of E codes into associated cause of injury.Figures for hospitalisations in the remainder of this report exclude re-admissions and transfers (except for bed days). After removing these cases, the number of bicycle-related injuries occurring during the 15-year period was 9,223.
