INCIDENCE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SITUATIONS
- In the NT, 20 per cent of respondents in the domestic violence phone-in (1996) reported sexual violence.
- 29 per cent of domestic violence survivors reported sexual abuse (Beyond These Walls, 1988).
- The 1991 Queensland Crime Victim Survey commissioned by the QLD Criminal Justice Commission found that 31 per cent of sexual assaults were committed by current or former partners.
- A 1994 Tasmanian study found that sexual violence was used in 675 of the reported domestic violence incidents (KPMG).
- A study conducted into domestic violence experienced by women attending an A&E dept in Newcastle found that in 29 per cent of cases, the offender attempted to have sex with, or raped, the female victim (Bates, Redman, Brown and Hancock, 1995).
