Public Health
- New notification and surveillance system for

- Distribution of almost 19,000 vaccine doses per
week to regions around the State, plus more than 22,000 routine vaccinations at the
Central Immunisation Clinic
- Introduction of Australian Standards, Hazard
Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), in the meat processing industry
- Fortnightly mosquito surveillance for Ross River
virus and Australian encephalitis (AE)
- Launched in July 1996, the Public Health Web site
recorded more than 49,000 visitors.
- The participation in breastscreening program up to
56 per cent, from 48 per cent.
Mental Health
- The Mental Health Act 1996 was passed by
Parliament in 1996
- A three-year growth program commenced following a
State Government funding commitment of $40 million with the first $6million allocated in
1996/97.
- Adult community mental health services were
expanded
- A consumer participation plan was developed which
will provide guidelines and recommendations for the ways in which consumers and carers can
most effectively participate at all levels within the mental health sector.
Continuing Care
- Progression of the nursing home restructure
project.
- Chair in Geriatric Medicine established at the
University of WA
- Establishment of the Departments Aged and
Continuing Care Unit (ACCU)
- Development of the palliative care plan

Dental Health
- More than 245,000 children were enrolled in the
School Dental Service.
- The Rockingham Kwinana Dental Clinic was upgraded
from four dental surgeries to eight dental surgeries.
