Delivering a Healthy WA
WA Mental Health

State Mental Health Policy and Strategic Plan 2010-20 for Western Australia (WA)

We currently have a unique opportunity to map out necessary changes to WA's mental health system. The Department of Health's Mental Health Division recently appointed Pricewaterhouse Coopers Pty Ltd to undertake a comprehensive review of mental health services and assist with the development of an overarching policy framework to guide mental health reforms in WA. This work will include comprehensive consultation with stakeholders.

The Minister for Water; Mental Health, Dr Graham Jacobs, officially launched this project at a forum with 140 key stakeholders on 10 June 2009. Dr Jacobs outlined his vision for a whole-of-government approach and joined-up services to assist people with a mental illness and their families.

The State Mental Health Policy and Strategic Plan 2010-20 for WA will guide the reform and redesign of mental health services and investment in mental health in WA. It is anticipated that significant gains will be achieved through major systems reconfiguration and shifting from a response based on illness and acute intervention to one focusing on wellness, early intervention and recovery.

Improving the mental health of all Western Australians is the shared responsibility of all levels of government, private and non-government sector agencies and the wider community.
