For consumers and carersOne in five Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime. A person with a mental illness is often referred to as a consumer by advocates and services. A family member or friend who provides voluntary care and support for a person with a mental illness may be referred to as a carer. In Australia, there are more than 2.5 million carers of people who have a mental illness, a chronic illness or disability, or who are elderly.
