Delivering a Healthy WA
Mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse

Frequently asked questions

Do nurses who work as technicians need to do the information session?

No. The Children and Community Services Act 2004 provides that the duty to report arises when a person who is a doctor, nurse or midwife forms a belief in the course of the person’s work (whether paid or unpaid) as a doctor, nurse or midwife. Accordingly, a person who is qualified as a nurse but is working in a non-nursing position is not required to report to the Department for Child Protection.

Irrespective of their statutory mandatory reporting duty, all WA Health staff should continue to comply with their relevant professional and ethical responsibilities in relation to sexual abuse of children.
