Procurement Reform

WA Health’s purchasing of goods and services has a huge impact on our economy and the ultimate delivery of high quality health care services to the community.

Providing best quality services in the most efficient way is a major goal, and in undertaking system reforms significant savings from areas such as procurement can be achieved.

In May 2005 the State Health Executive Forum (SHEF) endorsed strategies aimed at achieving procurement efficiencies and savings. As a result WA Health now has a more centralised procurement function with a reduction in duplication, better contractual strategies resulting in savings, better technology resulting in efficiencies and improved contract management of strategic contracts.

The initiatives and reforms to date have already achieved significant savings, delivering benefits that will generate expected savings of around $100 million over the next three years. These significant savings are being achieved without any reduction in the quality of products and/or level of services provided.

WA Health is leading the way in procurement reform. Our procurement professionals and all staff involved in this process are making a significant contribution to delivering health reform in Western Australia.

Patients are the winners with this new approach, with savings redirected into front line patient care.
