LOC Locations

Physical locations to which objects may be located. This includes geographic addresses as well as more general regions or locations. Both conventional addressing schemes and spatial co-ordinate (GIS) systems are included.

Any place that is referred to as a 'City', 'Town' or 'Suburb' and that is published in an official map. A CITY/TOWN is governed by a body (usually elected) such as a 'City Council' or a 'Town Council'.

Country

An internationally recognised sovereign area of the world. (Note: This definition excludes the EEC or OPEC or ASEAN being described as a country. Such examples, if required, can be implemented as REGION/LOCATION GROUP).

Countries may be classified by the Australian standard classification of countries for social statistics, ABS Catalogue no. 1269.0

Geographic Address

Identifies a physical location.

A GEOGRAPHIC ADDRESS does not always have all elements of an address available and recorded. For example, to record the known place of birth of a person may require only that the country of birth is recorded.

Local Government Area

A geographic area which is administered by a (usually elected) body such as a Council, Shire, or Municipality. A LGA is usually established under the terms of an Act of Parliament (in WA the Local Government Act).

Map Item

A MAP ITEM is a representation of a region of space, from a single point to a complex three-dimensional region. Such representations require specialised software (Geographical Information Systems) and sometimes hardware to interpret them.

Location identifiers are sometimes geocoded to link to such points or regions.

Other Region/Location Group

Any REGION/LOCATION GROUP that is not a Local Government Area. One common example is a Statistical Local Area.

Postcode

This is a code published within a country by the postal services of that country. Its primary purpose is to enable easy sorting and distribution of mail (by the postal service).

Region/Location Group

This is a notional grouping of any other geographic locations, including other instances of itself. These are set up typically for analyses and marketing purposes. Examples may include, "The Kimberley", "Perth Metropolitan Area" etc. Any one of these may in turn be subdivided into other (sub) groupings.
