Department offers injury control training
Training for health professionals and community groups in injury prevention is now being offered by the Health Departments Injury Control Program.
The training focuses on the departments recently published Injury Prevention Resource Package, a comprehensive reference manual providing information for community-based agencies and individuals with an interest in taking measures to prevent injury in their local areas.
It is the first manual of its kind in Australia, and includes a directory coded to the different categories of:
- childrens injuries,
- falls in older people,
- recreation injuries,
- intentional injuries, and
- road injuries.
Injury is the most frequent cause of death in young people and results in the hospitalisation of 38,000 Western Australians each year.
As all these cases are potentially preventable, the resource package and training offer the chance to greatly reduce the huge social and financial cost of injury in our community.
It does so by outlining strategies which target modifiable risk factors, involve other organisations, and are locally relevant.
The training programs also recognise the power of local people to reduce the rate of injury in their own community.
Training is offered over half or full-day sessions and will be available in country areas on a needs basis.
Further information on the training programs is available from Cindy Devine on (09) 388 4824.
