The information collected by the Department of Health is:

  • maintained in the statewide health data collections
  • stored in secure systems in secure locations
  • only accessed by authorised staff members
  • used for approved research by appropriately qualified researchers
  • linked to other approved data sources

The collection of information is authorised by legislation such as the Western Australian Health Act 1911 and the Hospital and Health Services Act 1927. The Department of Health is guided by the National Privacy Principles in the Commonwealth Privacy Act and by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Health Data Principles.
