Clinical information system

What is it?

The clinical information system (CIS) project aims to remediate the existing clinical applications which will provide :

  • a single consolidated, statewide system
  • enable WA Health to maintain a health record for all patients
  • reduce the need for paper based records currently stored at individual health services
  • will break down barriers to allow clinicians and care providers to share patient information and clinical knowledge

iCM (a component of the broader clinical management system vision) will be the clinical workbench or ‘one stop shop’ for clinical functionality in the 2008-2013 'Horizon 1' period.

The program of work will deliver improved functionality that includes:

  • consistent user ID password across clinical applications
  • ability to view discharge summaries, procedure reports, referrals and clinic letters
  • computerised provider order entry for pathology and radiology tests
  • results acknowledgement and review (pathology and imaging)
  • integrated clinical speciality application(s) supporting cardiology, gastroenterology and nephrology (renal). Integration with diagnostic technologies will enable electronic capture of critical data irrespective of the point of diagnosis (for example. a dialysis unit in a public/private facility)

Delivery date:

Implementation of the CIS will be via a phased approach. Development of system components will not take place until the project plan and schedule are finalised and the system configured.

The project is in the early planning stages. Key milestones will be available when the project initiation stage is complete.

Vision

The future state for clinical information system:

  • Will have an integrated and complete view of patient health information at the point of care
  • Will be able to share information electronically in a timely and secure manner across different geographic locations and all parts of the health sector
  • Will have access to data that allows them to more effectively monitor and evaluate service delivery outcomes
  • Will be able to electronically order tests, prescribe medications and refer individuals to other providers
  • Care decisions will be supported by access to appropriate information sources and decision support tools at the point of care
  • Will be able to collaborate with other professionals by more easily sharing expertise and evidence
  • Will have easy access to clinical knowledge and evidence sources to assist with skill development
