Requesting Police Assistance for Transport under the Mental Health Act 2014
Health Services state wide are required to complete a Mental Health Transport Risk Assessment Form which assists in determining the transport risk rating of a mental health patient and the most appropriate transport option to use.
The form has been revised in line with the Mental Health Act 2014 and is to be used in accordance with the ‘Patient Confidentiality’ (IC 0164/13) and the ‘Guidelines for the Transmission of Personal Health Information by Facsimile Machine’ (IC 0179/14) Operational Circulars.
WA Police and the Department of Health have been working together to decrease the involvement of police in the hospital to hospital transportation of mental health patients clinically assessed as high to low risk. Police will assist when the transport risk is deemed to be in the extreme risk category.
Please ensure all health staff involved in the transportation of mental health patients between hospitals are notified of the updated Mental Health Transport Risk Assessment form.
