Classification of Clinical Coders
Agreement has been reached with the Health Services Union on the appropriate classification for Clinical Coders employed in various settings across WA Health. This Agreement follows a consideration of the work value pertaining to clinical coding by the Public Service Arbitrator during 2005.
The classifications outlined below are to be implemented from the date of this Circular. Where an application for reclassification lodged by a Clinical Coder is pending determination, Health Services may agree to an operative date earlier than the date of this Circular but not earlier than the date of application for reclassification. Progression through the particular classification will continue to be by annual increment and, in the case of a Clinical Coder Level 4/5, will also be subject to the specific requirements for progression from Level 4.4 to Level 5.1 set out below.Clinical Coder Level 4 (This classification applies in all non tertiary hospitals)*
Clinical Coder Level 4/5 (This classification applies in tertiary hospitals only)*
Progression from Level 4.4 into Level 5 will occur subject to confirmation by the relevant manager of each of the following:
*A tertiary hospital is a hospital which provides services at level 6 according to the Clinical Services Framework Definitions document (WA Department of Health 2005, Clinical services Consultation 2005).
A new employee engaged as a Clinical Coder Level 4 or Level 4/5 will be appointed at an incremental point commensurate with their relevant experience and qualifications.
