Casual Enrolled Nurses Ė recognition of service on commencement and subsequent appointments
In accordance with clause 26(8) of the Enrolled Nurses and Nursing Assistants (Government) Award ("the Award"), the wage rate for enrolled nurses for the purposes of commencement wage is determined by their years of service, either full time or part time, as an enrolled nurse in the Western Australian Government health system.
Health services have discretion to recognise service as an enrolled nurse outside of the Government system. Where evidence of such previous service is required, the onus is on the employee to provide that evidence.
The Award prescribes that service in this context has the same meaning as it does for long service leave benefits for enrolled nurses. This means that casual service is specifically excluded.
Notwithstanding this exclusion, health services are, on an administrative basis, to recognise casual service for the purposes of determining the initial appointment wage.
In the case of subsequent engagements, determination of the appropriate wage level is to be administered in line with the provisions applying to casual Registered Nurses. Where the casual employee has worked an average of more than 24 hours per week in a year, the employee is to be appointed at the next wage increment point. Where the casual employee has worked an average of 24 hours per week or less in a year, the employee is required to work a further twelve months before an appointment at the next wage increment point.
