Employment of Psychiatrists
The State Mental Health Coordinating Team (SMHCT) was established in August 2002 in response to the adoption, by the Government of the State of Western Australia, of the recommendations made in the Report of the Health Administrative Review Committee, June 2004 (HARC) in HARC Recommendation 13.
The State Mental Health Coordinating Team is the advisory body to the Director, Office of Mental Health.
The State Mental Health Coordinating Team works in collaboration with the Office of Mental Health to implement mental health policy, strategic plans and service reforms that have been endorsed by the State Health Management Team.
The State Mental Health Coordinating Team has determined that, as a minimum standard, mental health services should require all prospective psychiatrists that are to be employed, to have provided a Certificate of Good Standing by the Medical Board of Western Australia. The Certificate of Good Standing should be provided by the Medical Board to which the psychiatrist is currently registered.
Certificates of Good Standing are valid for a period of three months from the date of issue. The practitioner can however request a copy of the Certificate. They provide evidence to an employer that the psychiatrist has unqualified registration with the Medical Board. It should be noted that the Medical Board of Western Australia could also provide a Certificate of Standing - this is insufficient evidence under this Operation Circular; Certificate of Standing will identify any qualifications under which psychiatrists are practicing.
Requests for Certificates of Good Standing should be made in writing to the Medical Board of Western Australia by the psychiatrist. Application forms can be downloaded from the Medical Board of Western Australian website - refer to "Registration Forms". The Certificate will be forwarded directly to the requesting employer. A fee is applicable.
