Requirement for Notification of Abortions under the Health Act 1911
It is a statutory requirement of the Health Act 1911 that all induced abortions performed in Western Australia are notified to the Executive Director, Public Health.
Any medical practitioner performing an abortion must complete the appropriate notification form1 and ensure that it is returned to the Office of the Executive Director, Public Health within 14 days of the procedure.
The data are collated by the Department of Health and reported under the Abortion Notification System. The abortion data are reconciled annually with the hospital discharge data supplied by clinics and health services.
The information is required for the accurate surveillance and monitoring of pregnancy termination procedures, and the data are used for reporting and the planning of public health programs.
Pads of the notification forms are available free of charge by telephoning the Department of Health (Child, Community and Primary Health Care) on 9323 6666.
For assistance or clarification in regard to the notification process, please contact the Senior Policy Officer, Gender Health on 9323 6666.
Dr Margaret Stevens
