Employees of WA Health regularly receive invitations to attend functions relating to their work. Similarly, some employees are placed in positions which result in them being offered prizes, gifts or inducements. Whilst it is recognised that the attendance at such functions can play a role in promoting WA Health, the attendance at such functions or receipt of a benefit may be perceived as a conflict of interest. To address this, the attached Guidelines should be used to determine if an employee should attend a function or receive a gift, prize or inducement.

Australian Communications and Media Authority Cabling Advice
Department of Health WA has received recent correspondence from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in respect to installation of computer and other communication networks in hospitals and other medical and non-medical facilities. Automated Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators
Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) can terminate potentially lethal ventricular arrhythmias by pacing or shocking the heart. They are indicated in a wide range of congenital and acquired cardiac rhythm disturbances for the secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. In July 2002, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued an approval order to expand the indications for ICDs. This decision was based on the MADIT II study which demonstrated that patients with a previous myocardial infarction and a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of less than or equal to 30%, who were randomized to treatment with an ICD, had a better survival than those treated with conventional medical therapy.

Availability of Rituximab for Approved Indications
The Western Australian Therapeutic Advisory Group (WATAG) recommends that rituximab (Mabthera®) should be listed on the formularies of public hospitals for use in the following approved indications, subject to the same restrictions as under the PBS, plus additional criteria for public hospital use:
  1. for the treatment of previously untreated, CD20 positive, diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, in combination with chemotherapy, in patients aged 60 years and over; and
  2. for the treatment of relapse or refractory, low-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; and relapse or refractory, follicular B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Availability of TNF-Alpha Inhibitor Drugs for the Treatment of Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis in Adult Patients
The Western Australian Therapeutic Advisory Group (WATAG) recommends that tumour necrosis factor (TNF) - alpha inhibitors, etanercept and infliximab, be listed on the formularies of public hospitals for the treatment of adults with severe rheumatoid arthritis according to PBS criteria, plus additional criteria for public hospital use.
