Delivering a Healthy WA
WA Cervical Cancer Prevention Program

Who can get the vaccine?

Gardasil has been approved for use in females aged 9–26 years and boys aged 9–15 years. Cervarix has been approved for use in females aged 10–45 years.

Research shows that the vaccine works best when given to girls around the ages of 9–12 years. These girls usually produce a better antibody response to the vaccine. The vaccine is also more effective if given before the start of sexual activity, therefore before being exposed to HPV.

The effectiveness of the vaccine in women who have already commenced sexual activity is uncertain as they may have already been exposed to HPV. These women should speak to their doctor about whether the vaccine is useful for them.

If you are not eligible for the national immunisation program, the vaccine is available through a GP for around $450.
