Delivering a Healthy WA
WA Cervical Cancer Prevention Program

Scientific information

Clinical trials in Australia and the US have shown both the Gardasil and Cervarix vaccines to be close to 100 per cent effective against HPV types 16 and 18. Trials also reveal there may be cross-protection for other types of HPV. More trials are currently in progress and more information will be available in the near future.

Immunity lasts at least seven years. Future trials should show if/when boosters are required.

Minor side effects may include redness, pain and swelling at the injection site, or mild fever. All vaccinations have some risk of side effects.

Women should not have the vaccine if they are pregnant or have had a serious allergic reaction to yeast.

Gardasil is manufactured by CSL and Cervarix is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.
