More information about colposcopy

A colposcopy is a close examination of the cervix and vagina. This is done by a specially qualified doctor. It usually takes about 15 minutes and is similar to a Pap smear. It is not an operation and you won't need anaesthetic or a hospital stay.

It is performed using an instrument called a colposcope, which is a special microscope on a stand. It is positioned outside your body, then the doctor looks through it to see the cells in your cervix and vagina.

The doctor will use a harmless solution to highlight any abnormal areas. If abnormal cells are visible, the doctor may take a tiny piece of tissue from the cervix. This may sting for a short time. The tissue (called a biopsy) is sent to a laboratory to be examined.
