Tips for Pap smears for women with a disability

  • When making an appointment, ask for a longer appointment time and check if they have disability facilities and equipment.
  • Before your appointment, write down the questions you would like to ask your doctor or nurse – or have someone else write them down for you.
  • If you use a communication device, take it with you and show the doctor or nurse how to use it.
  • You can show the doctor or nurse the most comfortable position for you to have a Pap smear.
  • You can take a friend with you to the appointment.
  • You can choose a doctor or nurse that you feel comfortable with.
  • You may prefer a female doctor or nurse to do the Pap smear.
  • You can ask to stop at any time.
