Delivering a Healthy WA
WA Cervical Cancer Prevention Program

For Indigenous women

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) women are:

  • 2 times more likely to develop cervical cancer
  • almost 4 times more likely to die of cervical cancer

One of the reasons why ATSI women are at greater risk of cervical cancer is that they are less likely to have regular Pap smears.

Indigenous Women’s Reference Group

The group aims to improve screening rates among ATSI women for both breast cancer and cervical cancer. The reference group:

  • provides advice and ongoing support about women’s health issues in their area
  • provides feedback and assistance with the development of promotional materials
  • acts as key contacts for their regions
  • takes information to their communities
  • attends reference group meetings

Members represent each health region in Western Australia, and include Aboriginal health workers and health promotion officers. The group works together to improve the communication between the WA Cervical Cancer Prevention Program and BreastScreen WA, and ATSI communities across the state.
