Schizophrenia and criminal offending

The overarching objective of the current study is to use a methodologically sound, population-based research design to provide reliable data on the association between offending and serious mental illness, and to explore the possible mechanisms for any association found. The specific aims of the study are:

  • to obtain estimates of the prevalence and incidence of offending in individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia compared to the population base rate, and the rate associated with psychiatric disorders other than schizophrenia
  • to describe the profile of offending in individuals with schizophrenia and to see whether it differed from offending by individuals with psychiatric diagnoses other than schizophrenia, and individuals with criminal histories who did not have a psychiatric diagnosis
