St John Ambulance – WA Ambulance Service Inc. Inquiry

Public submissions for review of St John Ambulance

Minister announces call for public submissions for review of St John Ambulance.

Interested members of the public are being urged to make submissions to the State Government’s independent review into the safety and quality of the St John Ambulance Service in Western Australia.

Health Minister Kim Hames said an advertisement would appear in The West Australian on 18 July 2009 outlining how submissions could be made.

The Government has appointed Greg Joyce, former director-general of the Department of Housing and Works, to conduct the review into the safety and quality of SJA. It will be overseen by the Department of Health’s chief medical officer, Dr Simon Towler.

“With the review officially commencing next Monday (July 20), it is timely for us to call on the public to make submissions about the safety and quality of clinical practices at St John Ambulance,” Dr Hames said.

“I urge any interested parties to take the time to make a submission as we would like this review to thoroughly investigate existing practices and identify any areas of change required.”

The terms of reference for the review have been slightly modified following a meeting between the Minister, paramedics and the Australian Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union (LHMU). The revised terms are available below.

Dr Hames said he was pleased the changes had given the LMHU and its members confidence in the inquiry’s focus.

Submissions should be sent by the close of business on August 3.
