Maternal and Child Health Collection

The Maternal and Child Health Unit provides the Department of Health with comprehensive state-wide data on birth events, birth outcomes and associated childbearing matters in accord with the requirements of the Western Australian Health Act 1911 - Part XIII Section 335, Part XIIIAB and Acts Amendment (Abortion) Act 1998.

The Western Australian Midwives' Notification System

Each year about 27,000 women give birth in Western Australia and this number has been steadily increasing. Under the Health (Notifications by Midwives) Regulations 1994, midwives are required to provide the Department of Health with notifications of cases attended. The Maternal and Child Health Unit is responsible for collection and management of the information received from the attending midwife on all births in hospital or home settings in WA. Birth related data has been collected since 1980.

The Western Australian Abortion Notification System

The Unit also maintains and manages the Western Australian Abortion Notification System. Information is received on all procedures from medical practitioners throughout WA. These data have been recorded since 1998.

Data Provision

The Maternal and Child Health Unit provides data to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare for national reporting, other government and community health services, and research institutes to assist efficient management and delivery of maternal and child health care.
