South Metropolitan Area Health Service

Armadale Kelmscott Memorial Hospital
The Armadale Kelmscott Memorial Hospital is one of four general hospitals designated to undergo a role change which will enable the health campus to provide for the health needs of its population and therefore to provide care closer to where people live.
The existing public hospital will be further developed in stages to a general hospital, to accommodate additional capacity and complexity, to improve community access to hospital care and to accommodate Western Australia’s population growth and changing demographics.
Stage 1 of the development will include:
- An expansion of the emergency department and related works

Bentley Hospital
The Bentley Hospital will undergo a role change to become a specialist hospital focusing on rehabilitation and mental health, along with some ambulatory procedures for the local catchment. This role change will allow patients to be treated in a facility specially designed to accommodate their needs.

Fiona Stanley Hospital
The new state-of-the-art Fiona Stanley Hospital will be built in Murdoch and provide secondary services to the local area, tertiary services for the south metropolitan area and some statewide services.
The Fiona Stanley Hospital is to be developed in two stages, comprising approximately 643 beds in stage 1 and expanding to over 1000 beds in stage 2.
Hospital features will include:
- a world class cancer care centre – providing integrated, comprehensive cancer treatment, including radiotherapy treatment facilities, medical oncology, palliative care and haematology;
- the State’s major centres for the treatment of trauma, burns, and heart and lung transplants;
- cutting-edge medical imaging services including MRI, CT and PET/CT;
- pathology, bio-medical engineering and cell tissue manufacturing facilities;
- renal transplantation and dialysis services;
- paediatric services; and
- comprehensive outpatient and allied health services.
The Hospital will be Western Australia’s flagship health facility, offering first-rate health care services to communities in the south of Perth and across the State.

Fremantle Hospital
The Fremantle Hospital will undergo a role change to become a specialist hospital focusing on rehabilitation and mental health, along with some ambulatory and inpatient medical services for the local catchment. This role change will allow patients to be treated in a facility specially designed to accommodate their needs.
In the interim, Fremantle Hospital will undergo some minor site preservation to ensure that it continues to provide safe and quality tertiary level services for the South Metropolitan Area.

Kaleeya Hospital has undergone remodelling works to enable the maternity services to be transferred from Woodside. The following improved outcomes for patients and staff were achieved with the relocation of services to Kaleeya:
- bedrooms with ensuite showers and toilets (unavailable at Woodside);
- access to backup operating rooms; and
- full compliance with current facility standards and therefore improved safety and risk management
The hospital has also been dedicated as a SurgiCentre for the South Metropolitan Area to perform elective surgery, which will assist in reducing elective surgery wait times. The SurgiCentre will specialise in orthopaedics, urology, plastic surgery, gynaecology and general surgery.

Murray District Health Centre
The Murray District Health Centre will be developed on the site of the existing Murray District Hospital in Pinjarra. This facility will provide an integrated facility, which will deliver a health service to the local community consistent with the recent decision of Government, the needs of the service providers and the views of the local community.
The proposed Murray District Health Centre will provide a range of Community Health and GP services as follows:- Aboriginal Health;
- Early Intervention / Child Health;
- Adult Allied Health;
- Ambulatory Mental Health services;
- Visiting services including Chronic Disease Management Team and drug & alcohol services; and
- General practice services

The Mandurah Community Health Centre expansion will comprise a “Node” for an Aboriginal Health Centre including a Primary Health Care Service as well as expanded accommodation for Community Health services and a separate Family and Child Health Centre.

The new Peel Health Campus Emergency Department was completed in March 2008. The expansion has doubled the number of emergency treatment beds from 12 to 24 beds and provided new equipment including a neonatal resuscitation machine, bladder scanner and cardiac monitor.
The upgrade has provided appropriate treatment zones to meet new models of care whilst keeping patient management efficient and effective, including a new four-bed paediatric assessment area.

Rockingham / Kwinana District Hospital
Rockingham/Kwinana District Hospital is one of four general hospitals designated to undergo a role change which will enable the health campus to provide for most of the health needs of its population and therefore to provide care closer to where people live.
The existing public hospital will be further developed in stages to a general hospital, to accommodate additional capacity and complexity, to improve community access to hospital care and to accommodate Western Australia’s population growth and changing demographics.
The redevelopment will include:
- a new chemotherapy unit;
- a high-dependency unit;
- a paediatric short-stay unit;
- additional emergency short-stay beds;
- new operating theatres;
- new dialysis services;
- increased aged care services;
- new surgical and medical wards;
- new medical consulting suites;
- expanded outpatient facilities and clinics; and
- purpose-built child care centre.

Royal Perth Hospital
Royal Perth Hospital will close once the new Fiona Stanley Hospital has been completed and services have been distributed among Fiona Stanley, Sir Charles Gairdner and general hospitals as appropriate to the catchment area.
In the interim, Royal Perth Hospital will undergo some minor site preservation to ensure that it continues to provide safe and quality tertiary level services. This includes the following projects:
- Expansion of the Emergency Department
- Expansion of the Burns/Trauma Unit
- Relocation of the Podiatry and Diabetes Clinics
- Refurbishment of the Breast Clinic
- Redevelopment of the Medical Oncology Department
