Support for carers
Many older people and people with disabilities are supported by carers who are relatives, friends or neighbours. Caring for an older person or someone with a disability can be a demanding role and the carer may need a break to maintain their own wellbeing or need advice and support.
Respite care provides a carer with an opportunity to take a break from regular caring duties. Respite care can be provided in the home, in a day centre, or in the community – whichever option best suits the carer and the person for whom they care. This can be provided as a planned service or on an emergency basis for a few hours or a few days, or you may need help for a short period, such as if you are ill or recovering from illness.
Carers may also need advice and support and this support is provided through carer support organisations.
